I have been to the City Hall/Brooklyn Bridge subway stop on the 6-train many times, but I never took notice of how "subway" was spelled.I did some research about the missing "u" in subway. Apparently, "v" was used instead of "u" in ancient Latin writings. It was not until the Middle Ages that we begin to see the "u" and "w" letters in writing.

Correct. You will also find the use of v in lieu of u on many courthouses and other government buildings.
